GPA Guide

Learn how to calculate your Grade Point Average for a single semester

GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester using the following formula:

GPA = Ξ£(Grade Points Γ— Credits) / Ξ£Credits

Example calculation:

  • Subject 1: Grade A (8 points) Γ— 3 credits = 24
  • Subject 2: Grade B+ (7 points) Γ— 4 credits = 28
  • Subject 3: Grade A+ (9 points) Γ— 3 credits = 27
  • Total points = 24 + 28 + 27 = 79
  • Total credits = 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
  • GPA = 79 / 10 = 7.9

RA grades are calculated as 0 points until cleared. Clearing an RA grade requires reappearing for the exam and obtaining a passing grade (B or above).

Understand how to compute your Cumulative GPA across multiple semesters

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is calculated across all semesters using:

CGPA = Ξ£(GPA Γ— Semester Credits) / Ξ£Semester Credits

Key points about CGPA:

  • Includes all completed semesters
  • Weighted by each semester's total credits
  • Current semester GPA can be estimated for planning
  • RA grades from any semester affect overall CGPA

Example calculation for 3 semesters (21 credits each):

  • Semester 1: GPA 8.2 Γ— 21 credits = 172.2
  • Semester 2: GPA 7.8 Γ— 21 credits = 163.8
  • Semester 3: GPA 8.5 Γ— 21 credits = 178.5
  • Total points = 172.2 + 163.8 + 178.5 = 514.5
  • Total credits = 21 + 21 + 21 = 63
  • CGPA = 514.5 / 63 = 8.17
